1 March 2015 Livingston Democrats Meeting Minutes
On March 1, the Livingston Democrats held their reorganizational meeting to elect officers, fill committees, adopt bylaws, charter a course for the upcoming election and build a base for a strong future.
Deputy Supervisor Will Yandik led a discussion about the party’s strengths and weaknesses and accepted nominations for the following two-year termed officers, approved unanimously:
Pam Kline, Chair
Karen Fetty, Vice Chair
Lewis Dimm, Treasurer
Eileen Yandik, Secretary
The following committees were established which are open to participation from any interested parties.
1. Communications. Chairs: Pat Goldsmith, Leslie Strilec. The goals of the communications committee are to maintain and update a website and Facebook page, compile an email listserve and updated roster of town democrats and their contact information, post meetings and important events and brainstorm effective ways to share information among the party.
2. Nomination and Caucus. Chairs: Pam Kline and Will Yandik. The nomination committee seeks quality candidates to run and win town-wide offices. The caucus, the formal and legal meeting to nominate candidates to appear on the ballot, typically occurs in the summer before an election year and is open for all registered town democrats to attend. Nominations are also possible at this time from any interested member from the floor.
3. Volunteer Coordination. Chairs: Pauline Czjaka, Sarah Price. The aim of this committee is to engage volunteers town-wide to call registered voters and remind them of upcoming elections and candidates, and marshal support from democrats to support candidates and important initiatives.
4. Registration. Chairs: Pam Kline, Margaret Davidson, Carole Clark. Coordinate with county efforts to register new democrats with a particular emphasis on clarifying policies for democrats who may be weekend or part-time residents.
In addition, the following county representatives were appointed. County representatives attend county democratic meetings and report back to the town committee on important developments and communicate issues important in the town to county leaders. Two county representatives are permitted per election district and we currently have two additional vacancies, one per election district. If you have questions or interest please contact a committee member.
Election District 1 county representative: Stan Yarian
Election District 2 county representative: Richard Roe
It was discussed that the Board of Elections are looking for poll inspectors to serve either half- or full-day shifts during election day. Poll inspectors either serve as clerks that welcome voters to the polling station and verify their name and address, or serve as technicians that help operate the ballot machines, including ensuring that voters are familiar and comfortable with the process. The position is paid and is open to any registered democrat. For more information contact a committee member or the Board of Elections.
A discussion followed that focused on issues important to democrats, including developing more renewable energy sources for town buildings, communicating more with part-time residents and examining speed limits on certain town roads. Developing a platform of issues is a long-term goal of the committee.
The next meeting of the Livingston Democrats is scheduled for Sunday, May 3 (time to be announced).
